Portugal Recap, David Villa scores Spain have earned a quarterfinal berth with a 1-0 victory over their Iberian peninsula neighbours Portugal in Pretoria. David Villa had the lone goal for the Spaniards who have booked a date with Paraguay in the final eight. The defending European Champions came out of the gate flying in this one as Liverpool’s Fernando Torres drove towards the Portuguese net and unleashed a rocket that keeper Eduardo punched away in the game’s opening minute. The Spaniards pressed on as Villa forced Eduardo into action yet again with a low blast after evading a pair of defenders. The tough tackling started early as Carlos Puyol dumped Cristiano Ronaldo with a late tackle, then Sergio Ramos sent Fabio Coentrao sprawling with another. Spanish ‘keeper Iker Casillas was called into action in the 20th minute as he punched away a dangerous drive by Tiago straight up in the air. He did well to recover and clear the ball before Hugo Almeida could head home the rebound. With the momentum on their side, Portugal continued to attack. Ronaldo unleashed a blazing free kick from nearly 45 yards away that Casillas had a great deal of difficulty dealing with. Once again he was able to clear before a Portuguese striker made him pay for his mistake. Portugal continued the siege on Casillas’ net with Raul Meireles swinging a dangerous cross into the box that Almeida got a head on. Unfortunately for the Portuguese it floated wide without.
