I don't know why the consensus in the comments seems to be that the foul was there. Actually I do know why, cos football has a groupthink culture of supporting hegemons over minnows. Italy just HAD to go through or it would upset the established order of things. The ref was looking for anything, even someone falling over someone after a legitimate tackle. As long as you're going for the ball not the body, that's a fair challenge and the attacker has to physically adapt. Absolutely ridiculous call. Australians haven't respected the establishment ever since cos we know that minnows can't/won't be allowed to win. We had that game, were one player up. And italy went on to win the whole cup – maybe Australia might have won it – we were on fire. Shame on the game.
Here again after Australia qualify for round of 16 again in 2022.. Italy cheated this penalty, and this gonna make them never play in round of 16 again for at least 20 years
I remember watching in the uk. Another match was on at the same time and they cut to this crucial penalty moment. Just added to the excitement and drama of it all.
