  1. Morons made him suffer a lot for 4 years. NONE of today's players would manage to tolerate 1/10 of such treatment.

Iron will and mentality. And what a goal it was 🙂

  2. He made everyone happy except for the Welsh! I was in a student bar in Cardiff, the Welsh were on all up on the benching, stools and chairs singing "you're all staying home, you're staying home, you're staying home…". The free kick went in, 100+ Welshman pushed off their perches, replaced by the England fans and "Football's coming home", "Who are you?" rang out and "Cheerio, cheerio, cheerio" as the Welsh filed out the door.

  4. I remember this goal in a Bar Med and it felt like an earthquake when everyone jumped up and then a barely conscious total muted guy dribbling from the mouth passed over my head crowd surfing. Proper football.

  5. For context:

In the 1998 FIFA World Cup, David Beckham was sent off in the round of 16 match against Argentina for kicking Diego Simeone. England lost the match after a penalty shootout, and Beckham was heavily criticized and faced a backlash in England, including abuse and death threats.

  6. And the significance of the game is 0.
    so congratulations.
that’s not even hate, it sounds like it, but the goal means nothing. it has no significance, but a meaningless win.
u act like it wins them a trophy or qualifies them for something.

  7. Let's not forget these celebrations are for a last minute equaliser, at home, against a team with nothing to play for in the last qualification game of WC 2002. Not exactly a winning World Cup goal. The 1-5 humiliation of Germany in Munchen was the highpoint of England's qualification campaign for that world cup, the highlight of the entire history of English international football in many fans' eyes. But even though qualification was then in 'our' hands, in English style we then failed to press home our advantage against Greece. And in case it is forgotten, England were eliminated at QF stage in the WC 2002, Germany went on to reach the final.

  8. You know he couldn't find the words, the pause just prior agrees. "I just wanted to make everyone happy." What he meant was something more akin to "it meant EVERYTHING."
