Hungary, known as the Mighty Magyars, had come into the competition on the back of a four-year unbeaten streak and were well-deserving favourites to emerge triumphant in Switzerland. The two sides met at the Wankdorf Stadium in Berne on June 27th. But a match that was expected to go down as a classic quickly degenerated into a viciously ill-tempered affair. Hungary started much the better side and quickly established a 2-0 lead, and although Brazil soon began to fight back, their efforts were hindered by niggling fouls from the Europeans.
