We are just waiting for the official announcement but it is almost certain that Jurgen Klinsmann will coach the USA. Klinsmann was speculated to target USA a few months back even if Gulati downplayed the reports. The poll we ran on Jurgen Klinsmann leading USA was in his favor as well.
Road to US coaching appointment
As pointed out over at Foxsports, Jurgen had to give up his Adidas endorsement because US team was a Nike sponsored group. Aside from that, he wanted to have complete decision making power for the national team which led to uproar of a lot of officials.
Could Klinsmann succeed?
I certainly believe in the ability of Jurgen Klinsmann and his fast attacking style is more American than German which led to Germany winning third place in FIFA World Cup 2006.
The changes he made to Germany are no easy feat considering they were the opposite of what was in place for decades. This shows the political skills of Jurgen to allow officials to embrace his philosophies. Getting the position while asking for complete decision power already says it all.
The skill of the players in US is nothing compared to Europe but Jurgen doesn’t rely much on individual skills but rather creates a system that allows everyone to move and play as one. Teamwork is at the core of Klinsmann’s style.
I have reservations whether they are going to reach the finals but I have no doubt that the performance of US at FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa is going to be their best ever.
