Brazil duplicate Germany’s Strategy in Dunga

in News & Features

Brazil DungaBrazil’s loss to France in the World Cup 2006 was a surprise to majority of the people, which prompted a series of write-ups criticizing Carlos Alberto Parreira’s boring style of play, opposite what Brazil has been known for — exciting, offensive-minded-plays, highly technical soccer.

Brazilian style was lacking in this year’s tournament that did not allow even the World’s number one Footballer, Ronaldinho, to shine. The media pressure including everyone shouting for change prompted for the resignation of Parreira, but brought surprise to the world when Dunga, a tough defensive midfielder and captain of Brazil when they won World Cup in 1994, was chosen instead of Vanderlei Luxemburgo or Paulo Autuori who are both experienced and well known.

Brazil’s move is similar to Germany’s hiring of Klinsmann who was a decorated player in his youth and hadn’t much to boast in coaching experience, nonetheless he inspired a revolution in German way of footballing. Despite his team’s lack of talent, they were able to reach the final four with a fast attacking style of play.

Brazil on the other hand is not looking for a revolution but a coach who can bring back the same style which helped them win five World Cups.

Dunga’s stand are as follows: He said he has no plans to change the team’s attacking style which brought them a record five World Cup titles and fans on all continents.

We have to consider that most of the European players are returning from vacation or aren’t even back yet, There’s a big risk that they could get hurt.

He said that he shall rely a lot on players from the local and say that his term will be the best time to take advantage of them.

When you talk about Brazilian soccer, there’s really nothing to change, the Brazil team won five world titles because it imposed its offensive and highly technical soccer. That’s the way the team will continue to play.

What makes the difference in soccer, what decides the games, is the talent of the players. But to make it happen you need structure, discipline and organization, on and off the field.

Dunga’s squad for the friendly against Norway on Aug. 16 in Oslo shall be announced on Tuesday and we shall expect a surprise selection in the hope of bringing back glory to Brazil.

He should thread carefully though, because unlike Germany, Brazil is a talent laden country and missing out on any of the big players is a big risk especilly when they lose succeeding competitions. This could prove very fatal for Dunga’s early career.

Klinsmann did not have much arsenal to choose from and had to squeeze out whatever there is in German football. His overachieving squad who won third place was celebrated as if World Cup 2006 was theirs.

Anything less than a World Cup for Brazil is considered a failure and Dunga better be aware of this.
