Brazil and Uruguay played another epic battle in the semi-final of Copa America 2007 Venezuela. It could be remembered that Brazil won against Uruguay in the same stage in the last Copa America going straight to winning the tournament.

It is a joy to watch two opposing philosophies slug it out in the game with Brazil playing beautiful football with grace dancing to Samba music; Uruguay on the other hand are the rugged boys using physical strength to outpower their opponents.

No one expected an all Asian finals in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship, furthermore, no one expected a Korea DPR title. Korea did not only win the finals but did it in a dominating approach finishing with a score of 5-0 where the first three came in the first half shocking the favorite team.

The loss of US Women’s World Championship became a redemption to Brazil in some way after their country lost in FIFA World Cup in Germany.

US controlled most of the game and looked like they will win a podium finish but Barbara of Brazil showed toughness in stopping goals all the way to the penalty shootout that helped them secure third place.

I wrote about the US Girls Football Team far from being pathetic as their boys, and true enough despite of their loss against Brazil in the battle for third place they still are way ahead of the men’s football team. It’s sorry to see them bow out without even winning the third prize award but the way they played proves a lot of their skill and potential going forward.

Majestic Falconets of Nigeria assured their spot in the quarterfinals with a crushing job over Finland 8 – 0. They did not need to win to join China in the quarterfinals but coach Emmanuel Tetteh Okonkwo had other things in mind. He instructed his team to attack strong and put the team away which saw them firing repeatedly and pounding Switzerland’s inferior football to the tune of eight times seeing the ball behind the net.

Cynthia Uwak led the charge against Finland in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship with a hat trick as a result of her continous and tireless attack on Finland.

As predicted France controlled the game primarily because of their midfield players who dominated Italy and set key plays resulting in 8 more shots and 2 more shots on goal. They threatened Italy most of the time and looked so close to scoring another goal after Zidane’s 7th minute penalty kick. The most beautiful shot could have been Zidane’s header in the 104th minute launched with precision, grace and the ball flying perfectly just under the top bar only to see Golden Ball rival Buffon deflect the shot.

One word for France—Zizou. Italy’s answer—Cannavaro.

Zidane’s performance against Brazil and Portugal proved his age together with Patrick Vieira is an unstoppable combination that brings experience, composure and leadership to the team. Zidane’s brilliance in the midfield will be greatly depended upon, especially when Italy’s defender—Cannavaro is a wall to reckon with, to create scoring opportunities for them and hope one of the deadliest strikers in the world convert on it—Thierry Henry.

The crying girl must be all smiles as hundreds of thousands of Germans gathered to watch their 3rd place game against Portugal as if it was a finals game. Germany did not disappoint them anymore with an entertaining win in the score of 3 – 1 in favor of the host nation.

Hours before the celebration multitudes of people gathered in bars, restaurants, pubs, big screen designated places, etc. and even thousands gathered in front of the team’s hotel room to show them they were behind them all the way.

Zidane’s goal is all that matters, another chapter to a decade of greatness.

Few of the greatest athletes in any sport could write a fairy tale story book ending as Zidane is presented with. Few if perhaps none of them came out of retirement to participate in the greatest sporting event in the world and show mastery and dominance across different generations. And today against Portugal he scored the goal via a penalty kick off Carvalho taking down Henry on the 33rd minute. He is outplaying his fellow legend Zigo who looked to have suffered an injury but is now ok.

France is confident they can get to the finals with Zizou playing his usual game and his usual game happens to be an enormous defensive problem for opposing teams.

Germany – Italy game was supercharged, where both teams were holding on to their dream fighting for each posession and looking for the golden goal that could carry them to the finals. They played their hearts out as if it was the last game in the tournament with the host nation’s crowd relentlessly staying with their team throughout 119 minutes of grueling gametime; until one minute left before Germany could make history, the dagger struck which silenced the entire stadium. Tears started to flow…

History heavily favors Germany however, Italian history against Germany favors them. Germany are 13 of 14 in Dortmund stadium with an impressive 59 – 7 goal difference. Italy is feeling the pressure playing against the host nation who will be going in multitudes shouting and cheering like barbarians raising the hearts of their country to unmatched proportions.

In the first half when Zidane clearly outplayed, outwitted the samba team, I could sense the butcher floating around waiting to crush Brazil straight to the ground.
